Cricketing SuperStar Suzie Bates Visits Broadleys

Suzie Bates 14

We were treated to a visit from the New Zealand women's captain, Suzie Bates, at Friday night training.

Suzie is one of the most exciting batters in the world (top score 168 off 105 balls v Pakistan). She has won many awards, including Wisden woman cricketer of the year. And she has also represented New Zealand in basketball at the Beijing Olympics.

Suzie is in England this summer playing for Hampshire, the Southern Vipers and the White Ferns – the New Zealand national team. Wiltshire cricket kindly arranged for her to spend some time with at Marshfield.

Suzie spent three hours at the club, observing coaching sessions with our girls and chatting to our women players. She gave us some fantastic insights into how a world-class cricketer thinks that we hope will inspire our girls and women to perform better and get more out of the game.

She then donned her pads and helmet and faced all-comers in a net to raise money for the charity we are supporting this year – Access Sport, who help children from disadvantaged backgrounds play sport.

Thanks very much to all who spent so much time organising the visit including Wiltshire cricket, Pete Sykes, Sam Dent, Southern Vipers, our coach Clare Webb, our youth supremo, Robin, and all the MCC officials.
